Gionee Marathon M5 Plus is little wider but is easy to handle and operate. Its a big handset having 6 inch screen which is packed inside a metal body. The top bezel holds the sensor, earpiece and the 5 MP camera while the bottom one holds the home button which has fingerprint sensor along with no backlit navigation buttons.
The right side of the phone has the power key and the volume rockers along with micro SD card tray and the left one holds the dual sim tray. The base of the phone holds the USB type C jack, mic and the 3.5 mm audio jack. It also has notification LED near the Earpiece.
Well, Display of the this phablet is what I liked the most. Gionee M5 Plus like said earlier comes with 6 inch Display which is FHD super AMOLED screen having resolution of 1080×1920, 368ppi pixel density with 2.5D curved glass. Usually, phones with big display are not easy to handle since they wont slid in your pockets easily or easy to carry out but despite these, some phones are enjoyable and M5 Plus happens to be one of them.
The Viewing angles of this device are good, color reproduction and touch response is also good. It is quite bright and gives good experience when watching movies or playing games.
Hardware wise, Gionee Marathon M5 Plus comes with 3 GB RAM and 64 gigs of internal storage. It supports 128 Gigs of extension via mirco sd card. On the first boot, you get roughly 52GB of storage with 1 GB free RAM. Gionee Marathon M5 Plus is powered by MediaTek MT6753 64 bit octa core processor clocked at a 1.3GHz coupled with Mali T720 GPU.
For day to day operations, the phablet is smooth enough however we could find hanging traces when multiple tasks were executed and intensive resource usage games were played. We used plastic back cover provided with the phone, hence did not find any traces of heat up during the usage period.
The sound of the phablet is good enough and clear. One can enjoy movies and videos with that much sound. Bluetooth, Wifi and cellular services worked well, and no issues were encountered related to that.
The fingerprint sensor is responsive enough, and we have no complaints with the Call Quality and the GPS as well.
Gionee Marathon M5 Plus comes with Android 5.1 Lollipop OS out of the box with an added layer of Custom AmigoUI 3.1 . The wallpaper app keeps changing the wallpapers and you get 5 different stories related to the wallpapers at a given time.
One can lock one particular wallpaper so that it pop ups every time you wake up your phone, one can subscribe different categories as per their like so that wallpapers from only that categories will be downloaded.
The Gionee Marathon M5 Plus gets the power juice from the 5020 mAh battery which sustained for almost 1 to 1.5 days with the mixed usage. Of course, the battery has been reduced when compared to Marathon M5 but this time they have optimized the battery in a way that it retains 90% of battery even after 600 charge cycles (Usually, the battery life would go down over the period of 1 year).
Possibly, the ‘Plus’ after M5 tells us the battery capacity addon. M5 Plus takes around 3.30 – 4 hours to charge completely.
Gionee Marathon M5 Plus comes with the primary camera of 13 MP, phase detection auto focus, LED flash with additional features of Geo-tagging, touch focus, face/smile detection, panorama, HDR and the secondary front camera of 5 MP. It supports 1080p @ 30 fps video recording.
The Camera works above average and in the low light, grainy images will be captured. In adequate light, the camera works good enough. We could find good details and natural colors.
Our Take :
Gionee Marathon M5 Plus is a good, premium feel device which is big on battery and big on display. The phablet is good enough for watching videos and for games which are not very much resource hungry or else, you can always turn your game settings to low. If you are looking for alternatives of this device, One Plus 3 and Xiaomi Mi5 could be your choice.
