Asus Zenfone Live Review : Smartphone for Selfie Lovers

Asus recently launched Asus Zenfone live which is the first to provide real time beautification feature when you go live on facebook and other social networks. All it does is remove the blemishes and beautifies your face in real time. This is something unique being offered but what about the Battery, Design, Build etc ? We had this device with us for sometime now and have come up with following :

Box Content :

  • Asus ZenFone Live smartphone in Shimmer Gold color
  • 2-pin charger
  • Micro USB cable
  • SIM ejector tool
  • User manual and warranty information

Design :

Design of Asus Zenfone Live follows similar design what other budget Smartphones have come up with. Zenfone live is very light in weight to carry i.e 120 gm and is very compact to have a good hold onto it. The phone does not come with metallic frame within but gives the metallic finish.

It is pretty much similar to iPhone design which is not the new thing these days and can be operated single handedly easily which we liked the most. On front bottom, the phone has capacitive touch button but sadly they are not backlit. Power as well as Volume Keys are on right.

3.5 mm Audio jack is on the top, Sim tray is on the left while the speaker grill and micro usb charging slot rest at the bottom. On front, we have 2.5D curved glass which has fingerprint resistant oleophobic coating covering the 5 Inch display. On front it also has 5MP front camera with LED while the back has 13 MP sensor. All in all, best thing about Design is it being light weight while We would have appreciated finger print sensor as well which this device lacks.

Display :

Asus Zenfone Live comes with the 5 Inch IPS LCD HD display unit which produces nice colors and crisp photos. The display is bit reflective but sunlight legibility is good enough. Auto brightness feature works well with the device and so is the bluelight filter which eliminates the blue light.

Hardware :

Zenfone live comes with the outdated hardware i.e Snapdragon 410 chipset coupled with 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of onboard storage which of course can be extended till 128 GB via micro sd card. The phone is not snappy you would expect when loaded with lot of Apps and takes time to load Apps. The phone does heat up little bit when resource intensive apps are used but its Plastic body do the needful and you wont experience much.

Camera :

Asus Zenfone live comes with 13MP having f/2.0 aperture, autofocus and a 5MP front camera, 82 degree wide angle and a LED flash. If you are a Selfie lover and capture moments everyday, this is the phone you need.

The cameras work good enough in Broad daylight and serves great pictures but produces grainy images in indoor which is not good. The camera process the images too much to make it best. The phone comes with BeautyLive app, which works with both 13MP as well as 5MP. When you Go live, you get a floating button which helps you make your skin smoother and soft on a scale of 1 to 10.

The camera UI is easy to operate and comes loaded with some interesting modes including Auto, HDR Pro, Beautification, Super Resolution, Children, Low Light, QR code, Night, Effect and so on.

Low light

Software :

Asus Zenfone Live runs on Marshmallow, Android 6.0 with the Custom UI which Company developed. Off late, Companies have started realising that people look for lighter UIs and so has Asus worked on optimising their UI but still quick settings panel, settings menu still look old which again based on personal choices is liked and disliked.

If you prefer personal customizations, then this UI is for you. Zenfone live comes with many bloatware apps, very few you would use in your daily life. Like everytime, you cannot uninstall any of those but disable them via settings. It also comes pre loaded with Facebook, Messenger and Instagram. Phone becomes little slow after prolonged usage.

There are several gestures option including double tap to wake up, double tap to turn the screen off, Motion gestures and the One Hand Mode that reduces the screen’s size so that you can use the phone in a smaller window.

Battery, Sound and Performance :

The phone is run by a 2,650 mAh battery and takes around 2 hours to charge fully. In standby mode, the battery is pretty impressive as you wont notice much battery drainage. In a day to day tasks, the phone lasts 6 – 7 hours. From Audio perspective, it comes with mono 5-magnet loudspeaker. The loudspeaker grill at the bottom has fairly loud volume in outdoors and you can enjoy music on it.

In terms of performance, Asus Zenfone Live does not come with exaggerating Hardware at the price of 9999 INR. You might have to deal with slight lags while using resource intensive apps. If you are a gamer, this device is not for you unless you want to play normal games. Normal activities like calling, texts are a go go for this phone.

Our take :

While the device comes with innovative feature, real time beautification, It could still offer more at this price, perhaps hardware in terms of SOC, on board storage, finger print sensor or RAM. All in all, if you are selfies lover, this device is for you.
